Fiji Islands Travel Destinations
Just the name Outer Islands sounds remote and this intriguing group of secluded private-island resorts is where many couples vacation in Fiji to experience an extravagant yet authentic escape – and to brag about it to their friends when they get home. With names like Yasawa, Vatulele, Royal Davui and the Wakaya Club, these luxurious Fiji island resorts offer unparalleled, all-inclusive accommodation that places a premium on privacy and personal service. Intimate – many have fewer 15 villas or bure – and subdued, they are especially popular with celebrities and sports stars for honeymoons, anniversaries and other romantic special occasions.
Some of these outer islands are so small that you can easily walk entirely around them, so they are not for travelers who need room to roam. But then, most of the action available on these gorgeous specks of palm-tree-studded sand is either inside the lavishly appointed bure, where the beds are divine and the spacious bathrooms (many with sexy outdoor showers) almost always have a view, or out on the gentle blue sea. With idyllic beaches and easily accessible snorkel spots right outside your accommodation, relaxation is effortless – at some resorts you can even raise a flag above your bure to have icy cold cocktails and a freshly prepared lunch delivered.
But when adventure beckons, you can heed it with a snorkel or dive excursion or a sexy just-the-two-of-you picnic on a wispy white sandbar holding nothing more than an umbrella, a well-stocked cooler and some snorkel gear. After a morning of castaway amour, you can return to your resort and let expertly trained Fijian massage therapists stroke away any lingering real-world tension. Or if physical activity is your preferred mode of relaxation, a few outer island resorts are in locations that offer hikes to view hidden caves or walks to local villages where you can present a sevusevu (gift of kava root) to the chief and share in a kava-drinking ritual that has been handed down for generations. Nothing is out of reach in Fiji’s Outer Islands.
Fiji is renowned for some of the best scuba diving in the world and home to over 1000 different species of fish and more than 300 varieties of coral. Spectacular corals, caves and grottos, and amazing marine life are waiting to be explored. Diving is available at, or nearby, many resorts and most offer introductory lessons and dive boat excursions.

The water is so clear you will be able to see fish and rocks lining the river bottom. When you reach your village destination, you will be given warm welcome by the villagers. Sigatoka River Safari is careful to visit a different village every day, to minimize the impact of tourism on the village lifestyle in this remote part of the world. You will then visit the village Chief's bure or community hall and take part in the kava ceremony, before a tour of the village and a traditional Fijian lunch, including wonderful fresh tropical fruit. Your village visit ends with traditional Fijian singing and dancing before your journey back.
